An increasingly popular dental technique, Laser Dentistry, uses concentrated light energy (laser beams) to treat a number of common dental problems.
Uses of Dental Lasers
- Fillings – Lasers can be used to prepare a tooth for a filling. After the filling is in place, they can also be used to harden it into place.
- Bacteria Removal – During root canal procedures, lasers may be used to remove bacteria.
- Oral Cancer Detection – Lasers can remove potentially dangerous pieces of tissue called biopsies. The removed tissue can then be tested for signs of cancer.
- Teeth Whitening – Lasers can speed up teeth bleaching procedures.
- Gum Treatments – During gum disease treatments, gums may be reshaped using lasers.
Benefits of Dental Lasers
While dental lasers aren’t available for all procedures, lasers can make many dental treatments much more comfortable. Lasers minimize bleeding and swelling during periodontal procedures. The accuracy of dental lasers allows dentists to minimize damage done to healthy tooth surfaces. In addition, lasers generally reduce the pain associated with many dental treatments.
Safety of Laser Treatments
Laser treatments have been an accepted treatment option since 1994. They have been approved by the FDA and in many ways are actually safer than the traditional dental drill. While the traditional drill can harm healthy tooth surfaces, lasers provide dentists with increased accuracy, minimizing unintentional tooth damage.
