What is TMJ?
Do either sides of your jaw click or hurt when you open your mouth? Do you wake up with headaches from grinding your teeth at night? Do you experience discomfort when you’re chewing food? If so, you may have temporomandibular joint disorder, or TMJ.
TMJ is generally caused by a misaligned jaw or an uneven bite. At night, your jaw may clench down to try to align the teeth, creating excess pressure on the tooth surface and occasionally causing tooth breakage. Some people develop TMJ early on in life, while others experience pain in their temporomandibular joint after a trauma to the head or jaw.
There are several treatments for TMJ that can relieve pain permanently. Many professionals simply prescribe painkillers for the pain associated with TMJ, but we believe that the best avenue is solving the issue directly. If you’re experiencing TMJ, contact Culebra North Dental Care to make an appointment to discuss our corrective dental treatments.
